A custom pen for me

Each year I make a few hundred custom pens for people all over the world. Customers contact me and tell me what they are looking for and I take it from there. We start out with the type of writing instrument that they want: ball point, roller ball or fountain pen. Then it’s on to the good stuff for the body of the pen. Maybe it’s a favorite color or a wood from a certain area of the world. Sometimes it’s about a profession or something that a person likes; coffee, favorite sport, cooking, wine, fishing, etc. Often times it’s simply because a friend has a birthday, wedding, or anniversary coming up so “what have you got that’s cool”?

As you can imagine there might be one or two pens that don’t make it out of my shop. I’m very picky and if the finish isn’t just right or maybe I cracked it putting it together that particular pen won’t be shipped out. Often times the pen will become my shop pen. I haven’t intentionally made myself a pen since turning a denim Katahdin pen for myself 16 or 17 years ago.

So with all of that in mind, a few weeks ago I decided to make myself a pen. I wanted it to be a ball point, acrylic, green and be something that I haven’t made before. Oh, and cool looking. I finally turned it yesterday.

What I ended up with was a Platinum Katahdin pen made in green raffir acrylic. It’s described as intensely colored resin combined with organic materials. I don’t know what the organic material in the resin actually is but it reminds me of bamboo or grass (yes, I know bamboo is a type of grass) that has been freshly cut and the ends are torn.
